Martini Media: old-school journalism jargon used to describe media that’s available any time, any place, anywhere.
I was born and raised in Southern California where I spent almost 25 years working in the corporate world of consumer magazine publishing. If you know anything about the trajectory of that particular business, you also know that managing such a thing any time beyond the 90’s might be arguably as rare as an actual unicorn sighting. Two-and-a-half decades of gainful employment in an ever-contracting field? I did that, and I’m proud of it. While I tend to equate most of my ability to dodge years of what felt like endless rounds of layoffs to the dumb luck that has seemed to follow me my whole life, I know I was also really good at the work and found it fulfilling. Okay, most of the time I found it fulfilling. It was also made up of long, punishing hours strung together by a never-ending series of press deadlines that controlled my entire life for years and left room in it for little else.
So, sometimes after much time in one place (too much?), change can be beneficial—whether you realize this on your own or life has to give you a gentle kick in your complacency to help you find some long-overdue forward momentum. (I’m not saying the latter was me, but… the latter was definitely me.) On this note, after the national magazine I worked for was shuttered in the early days of COVID and after decades of imagining my life only one way, in July of 2021 I found myself relocated to Lewisburg, a lovely small town in Central PA, with my husband, our three big dogs, and our now three cats—one who came over with us and two who eventually asked to move in. Who were we to argue?
I arrived armed with my journalism degree, my minor in creative writing, and my many years of experience doing everything imaginable in the communications field—from writing and editing to laying out and final-approving page content to marketing and advertising work. And while my intent was to move here and open my own small marketing company, life had its own plan—as it usually does—and I unexpectedly found work and friends and community at our local university. All such treasures in my ever-shifting life.
All this being said, I’d still like to take all of this work I continue to love so much, even if it means doing some volunteer work on the side for friends or community groups who might have such a need. Team up with me, and let’s discover what we can create together!
She's the perfect combination of Leslie Knope and Penelope Garcia.
My stepdaughter, describing me a few years back to a couple of her friends. Until the day I die this will remain the greatest compliment I've ever been given. 😆 (Also, this only makes sense if you are familiar with both Parks & Rec and Criminal Minds.)
If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it. Or, if proper usage gets in the way, it may have to go. I can't allow what we learned in English composition to disrupt the sound and rhythm of the narrative.
